Irish greyhounds, bred specifically for the racing industry, are being subjected to arduous journeys spanning thousands of miles to nations devoid of animal welfare laws. Approximately 80% of dogs are shipped from Ireland to the UK, only to be subsequently transported to countries such as Pakistan, where they are exploited for racing. There, they're without any legal protection against abuse and death. Irish breeders, owners, and trainers are also sending dogs to China, where their fate is often sealed towards death. The extent of the racing industry’s disregard for the welfare of these highly sensitive dogs appears to have no bounds.
The governments of Ireland and the UK have failed to intervene and prevent the shipment of dogs to countries lacking any animal welfare laws. Consequently, we, the undersigned, believe the government and the racing industry have shown no commitment to protecting these dogs. We are calling for an outright prohibition on greyhound racing, to be effective from 2023. A four-year phase-out period is suggested to ensure a minimal number of surplus dogs will remain by the time the ban comes into effect in 2023.
The greyhound racing industry is reliant on inhumane practices. It's time we BAN IT NOW!!
