End the Mass Slaughtering of Dolphins, Whales, and Porpoises
Target: Carmen Revenga, Sustainable Fisheries Strategy Lead at Global Oceans
Goal: End the illegal slaughtering of dolphins, small whales, and porpoises.
Each year more than 100,000 dolphins, small whales, and porpoises are killed by people. Many are used as fishing bait for sharks, tuna, and other fisheries.
Hunting in this quantity has potentially disastrous effects on the population of cetaceans, as well as the ocean. There have even been reports of killing through extreme tactics such as using dynamite. The cruel and illegal slaughterings need to come to an end. One of the top countries contributing to the killings is Peru. Alone, Peru kills up to 15,000 dolphins a year for shark bait. Sign this petition and demand that these killing come to an end and stricter enforcement is put into place.
Dear Ms. Revenga.
Thousands of dolphins, small whales, and porpoises die each year at the hands of fisherman in Peru. Not only are they killed for food, but also for bait. 15,000 dolphins alone are killed each year for shark bait in Peru. These dolphin hunts are inhumane and illegal consisting of killings using harpoons, knives, machetes, nets, spears, and even dynamite. They endure cruel painful deaths and there needs to be an end to these cruel acts.
We demand that stricter laws are put in place to stop the suffering of these dolphins, whales, and porpoises.
